Michigan State University’s Study and Internship Programs in Hawaii combine field and classroom experience in a culturally rich setting which provides students with an opportunity to expand their worldview without leaving the U.S. The Study Program is designed for all undergraduate students in all majors. For juniors and seniors, the Internship Program provides a professional learning experience in a multicultural environment.The multi-ethnic nature of the Hawaiian community encourages interaction with others from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and enhances the academic and internship experiences.
The Study Program offers an academic focus on Hawaii culture, tourism and other social issues and includes class meetings with University of Hawaii professor and students, field experiences and community service work. The Internship Program features assignments based in Honolulu that allow students to expand relational skills while obtaining hands-on experience with a diverse island population. Internship placements in the social and behavioral sciences have been established to maximize learning in this environment. New placements are in other areas are being added. Internships are determined by MSU Study Away Program staff and based on each student’s academic and career interests.
Cultural Field Experiences: Both the Study and Internship programs combine to share a weeklong immersion experience into native Hawaiian culture. This intensive field study takes place on the “Big Island” of Hawaii.
Study Program Dates: June 22 to July 22, 2017 (to be confirmed)
Internship Program Dates: June 22 to August 12, 2017 (to be confirmed)
Eligibility: 2.5 minimum GPA recommended; junior or seniors only for Internship Program
Courses: ISS 300-level and other options for Study Program; SSC and HDFS options for internships for a minimum of 8 credits
Program Fee: Study Program $2700*, Internship Program $4200*
Early Admittance - October 15th
Summer - March 31st
Students will pay tuition plus program fee. Program fee covers housing and two daily meals at the University of Hawaii, field trips, and the group inter-island flight between Honolulu and Hilo. Program fee does NOT include tuition, some meals, travel to and from Hawaii, transportation within location, or personal spending money.
