As a student choosing a major in the MSU College of Social Science, you’ll find an amazing array of choices to fit your interests and ambitions. Whether you want to follow your passion or discover it, the College of Social Science is a place where you can find your path.
Excelling in scholarship, collaborating with faculty in research opportunities, and putting academic work into action (through internships, service-learning programs and study abroad) are the hallmarks of a College of Social Science student.
We are a large college with many opportunities, but the College of Social Science becomes much smaller when you begin to focus on your major. There are over 25 academic advisors throughout the college ready to answer questions and offer advice when needed. There are also many student organizations and clubs in our college (not to mention the hundreds more found around campus). Our size also makes multi-disciplinary studies possible. Are you passionate about politics but need economic insight to address an issue you’re studying? Do you want to help children with special needs but require information from psychologists to develop your skills? Perhaps you will even choose one of our interdisciplinary majors.
In the College of Social Science, there are 12 departments and schools and numerous centers, institutes, programs, and minors guiding more than 6,300 undergraduate and graduate students. Nearly 400 distinguished faculty lead the way. Opportunities abound to work directly with faculty on research and other projects, even as an undergraduate.
Being a student in the College of Social Science is so much more than classes and studying. We offer an interactive culture where getting hands-on with your research or study area is always encouraged. Several scholarships are awarded by the college including a Dean’s Assistantship award to support mentored research projects. The college is also home to the Social Science Scholars Program to which focused and ambitious students can apply for an integrated experience including amazing academic opportunities. And there are several similar programs in our departments that provide opportunities for many students in our majors.
In addition, every student can take advantage of an amazing variety of study abroad, study away, internship, and service-learning options. We emphazise applying what you learn through experiential learning as you prepare for your career.
In partnership with the MSU Office of Study Abroad and other MSU colleges, the College of Social Science offers more than 50 faculty-led study abroad programs in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. There are also more than 15 international internship programs and more than 25 exchange programs and exciting study away options in places like Hawaii, Washington, D.C. and New Orleans. Whatever your area of study, wherever you want to go, we provide the guidance you will need. Valuable field experience can also be gained through domestic and international internships and new service-learning projects in Detroit, across the U.S. and abroad.
