Dr. Joe T.  Darden is a Professor of Geography, Environment & Spatial Sciences and former Dean of Urban Affairs Program at MSU. He received his Ph.D. in 1972 from the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests include urban social geography, residential segregation, immigration and socioeconomic neighborhood inequality in multi-racial societies. As an expert on urban residential segregation, fair housing issues and neighborhood racial/socioeconomic inequality, Dr. Darden speaks to racial and socioeconomic protests, such as those that occurred in Ferguson, Missouri, in mid-2014.He is an author and co-author of more than seven books Including Detroit: Race Riots, Racial Conflicts and Efforts to Bridge the Racial Divide, published by Michigan State University Press in 2013. He received a Distinguished Faculty Award in 1984 and is a former Fulbright Scholar, Department of Geography, University of Toronto, 1997 to 1998.
