Gerson Mental Health Initiative

In 2016, The Social Science Scholars Program created The Gerson Mental Health Initiative. Thanks to Mark and Barbara Gerson, this program is able to provide extra mental health resources to our students. The gift provides wellness seminars, small-group skill building, individual counseling and a referral service through the MSU Psychological Center.

Wellness Seminars

Wellness seminars are provided to the first-year scholars, but all scholars are invited to attend. Experts from the MSU Psychology Clinic’s graduate program lead seminars covering a wide-range of topics. Examples from the past have been:

  • Transition to college
  • Mindfulness
  • Connections between physical and mental health
  • Motivation

Small-Group Workshops

The MSU Psychological Clinic will also offer a small-group workshop series, Science of Success, for Social Science Scholars who want to learn skills to manage their emotional experiences, family and peer relationships and more general difficulties coping with stressful situations.

Topics include:

  • Growth mindset
  • Goal setting
  • Emotion Awareness
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Healthy Habits
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness
  • Assertiveness
