Building Belonging: MSU Event Highlights Community and Mental Health
October 3, 2025 - Shelly DeJong
Michigan State University’s Mental Health Research Connect, in collaboration with NAMI Lansing, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, will host a special event during Mental Illness Awareness Week on October 9.
The event will feature Dr. Vikram Patel, a professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, who will deliver a virtual keynote lecture titled “A Rights-Based Approach to Mental Health Care.” Dr. Patel is an internationally renowned expert on community-based approaches to mental health.
The talk will be followed by a live panel discussion with a peer support specialist, a psychiatrist, and community activists. They will share insights on how connection and belonging can serve as critical foundations for recovery from and prevention of mental health conditions.
“This event is about rethinking how we approach mental health—not just through services, but through relationships, community, and a sense of belonging. We’re thrilled to bring so many mental health experts, including the global voice of Dr. Patel, together to imagine what accessible, rights-based mental health support can look like in practice,” said Katharine Thakkar, Associate Professor of Psychology and Director of MSU’s Mental Health Research Connect.
MSU Mental Health Research Connect aims to bridge the gap between researchers and individuals whose lives are impacted by mental illness. They welcome any adult over the age of 18 to join their program, whether they have experienced mental health challenges themselves, have loved ones who struggle with mental health, or just want to get involved. NAMI Lansing provides advocacy, education, support, and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental health conditions can live healthy and fulfilling lives.
"At NAMI Lansing, we’re grateful for the opportunity to bring researchers and the community together," said Katreva N. Bisbee, NAMI Lansing President. "Collaboration helps us all better understand the real impact of mental health challenges. We’re especially excited to welcome Dr. Vikram Patel, who will share how belonging and strong community connections can play a vital role in supporting mental health and care."
