Dr. Emine Ö. Evered is an Associate Professor of History at Michigan State University. A scholar of the modern Middle East with a focus on late Ottoman Empire and Turkish Republic, her first book Empire and Education Under the Ottomans: Politics, Reform and Resistance from the Tanzimat to the Young Turks(I.B. Tauris, 2012) dealt with matters of educational policy and schooling in terms of society-state relations, identity politics, and international affairs. Since that time, her research and publications have focused on questions of public health, disease, sexuality and sex work, and intoxicants. She is currently completing her second manuscript; it deals with the rise and fall of prohibition in Turkey.
