Spartans Inspire MI Success

This competition will highlight the different ways in which our students are inspired to be involved in Michigan as they expand their personal and professional portfolio. Open to all degree seeking students in the College of Social Science who will or have participate(d) in an experiential learning program!

As a Social Scientist, what inspired you to gain experience beyond the classroom in Michigan? In what ways do you think your experience contributes to the success of a specific community or the state of Michigan?

All submissions must adhere to the general guidelines outlined below. Students must submit their original work by March 22 at Dean's Choice Grant 2020: Spartans Inspire MI Success.

General Guidelines

  1. Digital submission: Presentation, PowerPoint, Video, Blog, Vlog, and Website (for alternative digital form, please contact our office)
  2. Entry must:
    1. Be submitted using the online application
    2. Be original work and innovative, and have the ability to engage and/or appeal to other students.
    3. Clearly answer the questions: How did your service impact the community? How did your experience influence your understanding of service?
    4. Highlight with clarity and depth the value of service and experiential learning as an important and transformative experience for undergraduate students.
    5. Articulate the benefits and reflection about your service and experiential learning experience
  3. Student must have completed or is currently enrolled in an academic internship course, volunteers, does any type of service, research, or any relevant experiential learning program. If you have any questions regarding what constitutes a relevant experience, please contact the Office for Experiential Learning.
  4. Presentation (e.g. sonnet, poem, song)
    1. The length of the presentation should be between 3-5 minutes
    2. Include Name, Major, Title, Experiential Learning Program that you participated in
  5.  PowerPoint
    1. The length of PowerPoint should not exceed 5 minutes
    2. Include photos, text or videos
    3. Include name, major, title experiential learning program that you participated
  6. Video/Vlog Guidelines:
    1. The length of the video should not exceed 120 seconds (2 minutes).
    2. All video entries should begin with a title screen that includes:
      1. Name
      2. Title of the video
      3. Major
      4. Experiential Learning Program that you participated in
    3. Student is permitted to use PowerPoint or Prezi in the video
    4. All video entries must be submitted through YouTube. Then submit the link in the online application.
  7. Blog/Website Guidelines:
    1. All blogs or websites should include:
      1. Name
      2. Major
      3. Experiential Learning Program that you participated in
    2. Minimum of 2500 words within the blog posts.
    3. Minimum of 4 pictures to be included within the blog posts and website.
    4. Student must submit the link in the online application.
  • If desired, students are allowed to submit a combination of digital submissions.
    • For example:
      • If you choose to do a blog, you can include vlog or video.
      • If you choose to do a website, you can include blog or video.

  • Limited use of copyrighted material will be permitted in the entry so long as it is lawful or fair use, and so long as such use does not constitute the majority of the entry. 

  • Student must credit all sources used to create the submission in the end credits or in a separately submitted works-cited list.
