Capital Projects & New Programs

The College of Social Science is helping to answer this call. We want to solve global challenges with insights on human behavior, some of the most pressing challenges facing our world today.

From changes to work in the era of complex teams and the widespread use of artificial intelligence to the challenges of combating cybercrime; from the need for creative ways to promote well-being and address mental and physical health across the life span; to the advances that happen when historical insights and advanced analytics are used to craft and evaluate sound public policies.

The world needs social scientists to achieve transformational impact for the common good. Help us reach our goal.

Funding Progress

34% of our funding goal has been met. With the help from over 6.6k donors, we have raised over $46 million since 2022. Learn more about our funding priorities below.

SOCIAL SCIENCE SCHOLARS

With the Social Science Scholars Program, we offer students more opportunities, support and one-on-one investment than any other undergraduate program at a major research university in the U.S. We will continue to recruit talented, accomplished and passionate incoming students and help them excel by creating a close-knit cohort experience. This program is the premier talent incubator in the College of Social Science.

Goal: $30 million

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

We believe in the transformation of knowledge into action that happens when students apply the knowledge gained in their on-campus courses to experiences outside the classroom. In fact, we require all majors to complete at least one high quality experiential learning course and offer exceptional experiences with programs like InnovateGov and the Flint Community Initiative. Scholarships for these opportunities help create a more engaged, prepared student body.

Goal: $50 million

RESEARCH

Our signature thematic areas are about working together to create a sustainable, healthier future for all and impacting the common good by focusing on physical, mental and behavioral health across every stage of life.

  • This includes the Future of Work initiative, which explores how technological advancements transform organizations while also promoting ethical decision making and workplace wellness so everyone can thrive.
  • Our scientists are also working to preserve the beloved Great Lakes coastlines and communities by mapping the evolving changes in the lakes and the impact on the people living in those areas.
  • We also are helping to solve the pervasive and increasing problem of cybercrime. Our cybercrime expert team is working to train the public safety community on how to better investigate, solve and prosecute cybercrimes. This effort is the only of its kind in the nation.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

Our Financial Literacy initiatives are a signature area for the College that helps prepare MSU students of all majors to manage financial resources effectively across the life span. In addition, the Financial Literacy for Personal and Community Success minor equips students with the skills to manage finances and work in different employment sectors like human services, non-profits and for-profits. Our goal is to expand the reach of the financial literacy initiatives and double enrollment in the next three years. We will also continue leading the Go for the Green team with MSUFCU to promote financial education and meet student needs.

Goal: $20 million

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND DISCOURSE

These initiatives focus on civil engagement and discourse, bringing research, teaching and real-world practice together. Through hands-on learning, we’re helping students effectively engage with communities, solve pressing issues and make a real difference in the world. Through interdisciplinary research teams of faculty and students and by partnering with local organizations, we will continue fostering collaboration and creating positive change.

Goal: $31 million
